Friends and family scripts, for work that mixes money with a relationship

Six messages for work you do for a friend or family member. Agree the price up front, send the written quote anyway, and show the discount on the invoice. Chase a late payment gently, say no to a free favour, and answer a friend-of-a-friend who wants the same deal. Fill in your details once at the top of this page, and every script below updates.

Work for a friend or family member is a normal job with an extra layer. The price, the quote and the invoice still need to happen. A relationship makes each one a little more awkward to raise.

The first three scripts cover the money conversation, the written quote, and the invoice with the discount shown. The last three cover a late payment and saying no to a free favour. The final one answers a friend-of-a-friend who asks for the same deal. Fill in your details once at the top of this page, and every script below updates.

Scripts

Script 01 · Agreeing the price up front

Text

Hi [Client name], good to talk today. Before I start, I want to be clear: I'll do this at [full rate / a set discount / as a favour]. That way we both know where we stand.

Why it works Naming the price choice before the job starts, in plain words, stops it turning into a surprise on the invoice.

Script 02 · The written quote to a friend

Email

Subject: Quote for [job], as promised

Hi [Client name], Here's the quote we talked about, [Amount]. It covers [what's included]. Doing this in writing, even for us, keeps it clear for both of us. Let me know if you'd like to go ahead. [Your name]

Why it works A quote in writing sets the scope. Then "helping out" cannot quietly grow into a bigger job than you meant.

Script 03 · The invoice, with the discount shown

Email

Subject: Invoice [Invoice #] for [job]

Hi [Client name], Here's the invoice for [job], [Invoice #]. The full price is [full amount]. I've taken off a [discount name] of [discount amount]. The total due is [Amount] by [Due date]. Thanks again for the work. [Your name]

Why it works With the discount on its own line, your friend sees the real price. They also see what they are not paying.

Script 04 · A gentle chase to a friend

Text

Hi [Client name], it's [Your name]. Just a note that invoice [Invoice #] for [Amount] was due on [Due date]. No rush if it slipped your mind, just wanted to flag it.

Why it works A friend gets the same reminder as any other client. Naming it as a simple flag, not a demand, keeps the tone right for the relationship.

Script 05 · Saying no to a free favour

Text

Hi [Client name], I'd love to help, but I can't do this one as a favour right now. [Reason, e.g. My diary is full.] Happy to quote it at my normal rate if that works for you.

Why it works A short, honest reason, plus a real alternative, keeps the door open without the job being free.

Script 06 · A friend-of-a-friend asks for the same deal

Text

Hi [Client name], thanks for getting in touch, [name] said good things! I quote new clients at my normal rate, so here's my price for [job]: [Amount].

Why it works A friend-of-a-friend is a new client. Naming your normal rate up front avoids an assumption that the family discount comes with the referral.

Questions

Should I give a friend a discount?
Only if you choose to. Full price, a named discount, or a free favour are all fair choices. Say the one you picked out loud, before the job starts.
Do I still need to send a quote and invoice for family work?
Yes. Both keep the scope and the price clear, even for a small job. That protects the job and the friendship.
How do I chase a friend who has not paid?
The same way you would chase any client, on the same schedule. A plain, friendly flag works better than letting it drift because it feels awkward.
Do these messages send automatically?
No. You write and send every message on this page yourself. BizBinder does not track a discount agreement or message a client for you.

Want the discount kept honest on the invoice?

You write and send every message on this page yourself. BizBinder has no per-client price list and no discount code. An invoice can carry a discount as its own labelled line, so your friend sees exactly what was agreed. Reminders follow the same schedule on every sent invoice. You cannot switch them off for one client.
