After the job

Handover

The short answer

Handover is the moment a finished job passes to the client at the end of the work. The job is agreed, confirmed, and closed off. On some jobs, someone else must also sign it off.

What it means

Handover covers the whole close-out, not just the walk-round. You show the client what you did. You agree any snags with a date on each. You get a plain confirmation before you invoice. Treat it as one deliberate step. It does not happen on its own once you stop working.

A main contractor, a landlord, or a letting agent may be involved in the job. The person who signs off the work is then not always the one you dealt with on site. Name who that is, and send the close-out record to them directly. Otherwise a finished job can sit in limbo between two people, each assuming the other is dealing with it.

For example

You finish a kitchen fit for a tenant. The letting agent must accept it on the landlord’s behalf. You send the same close-out message to the agent and name what you need confirmed. You invoice once they reply.

The mistake to avoid

Assuming the client you spoke to on site signs off the job. A main contractor, landlord, or agent may be the one whose confirmation you need.
